What happens when you try to say a complex thing simply? What does it look like to write, and make art, for everyone? Exoteric ideas are supposed to be for everyone — accessible and widely shared. They aren’t for the privileged few and they deal with the commonplace. Where does that leave writing? The pieces in Exoterica: An Anthology play with this tension and explore the meaning of the esoteric’s lesser-known twin.
Exoterica is the inaugural publication of Cantine Press, a publishing experiment launched in 2024 by Julia Uyttewaal that brings together new + established writers in multiple languages. As the Creative Director of the press, I brought this anthology to life visually. The book features over 15 authors and artists, including four of my own published drawings. Our special edition book was risograph printed at Chute Studio in Oakland and was hand bound by Julia and myself.
